After quite a snowless winter, spring is here with extended daylight hours to walk the dog and warm sunbeams for the cats to lounge in. It also brings mosquitos that appear to be super sized this year and hungry ticks looking for a meal. We want all our patients to be smart and compliant about parasite protection.
We currently have two dogs in our practice going through heartworm treatment. Not an easy or inexpensive thing! Both dogs are local dogs and we are definitely seeing more dogs infected with heartworm this year. Heartworm is best prevented with monthly medication, Sentinel or Heartgard as the two preventatives we sell. We recommend year-round as New England weathers are very unpredictable. Heartworm preventatives are very safe and they prevent a very serious disease! Come by the office now to pick up Sentinel and you can get a rebate of $40 off two 6 packs. Limited $40 rebates so don’t delay!
As for the little creatures known as ticks… we recommend year round prevention as well. Yes, there are some animals that are more likely to get ticks then others and local environment can make a difference, but no pet is really 100% safe from ticks.
Ticks come in tiny sizes and they do not pack a punch when they suck you or your pet’s blood. It’s not like a quick bee sting that it’s impossible to not notice. Ticks can be on a pet or a person for days… allowing the tick to transmit diseases like lyme or rickettsial diseases.
The Seresto collar is great and it is cool polymer matrix technology that allows a low dose concentration to be released for 8 months as opposed to a monthly initial high dose that decreases over the 4 weeks. The collar is great as there is no greasy residue, no remembering to apply monthly and is very efficacious. I happily use it on my pets that sleep with us and stay tick free. We do also sell K9Advantix, Frontline Plus for cats and Bravecto. Talk to us about the best product for your pet.
We are happy to announce that Dr Clara Williams, formerly of Mass Vet Referral Hospital in Woburn is now the staff ophthalmologist at BluePearl in Waltham! We are also very happy for Dr William Snell as he recently passed his boards and is now certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons as a diplomat! Congrats.
We recommend BluePearl to all of our clients for after hours care along with specialty and advanced surgical care. Check out their website.

Text messages from cats that feel better with dental care! Blade is a cat that was recently adopted from a shelter but was loosing weight and hiding from being in so much pain from stomatitis, a severe inflammation of the gums. After two procedures, he is living the good life with dedicated owners and a healthy mouth.
The number of clients that are brushing their pet’s teeth is growing in leaps and bounds! Thank you!
We are excited to have Sara, a senior from Danvers High School with us during the month of May as part of her senior year internship program. She is interested in the Veterinary Profession and this will give her a chance to see it all first hand.
